Weekly Perusables: Tooth Ring

Tooth Ring, by Genesis Breyer P-Orridge, is part of Herron Art Library's artists' book collection, and is currently on display in the arists' book alcove. The silver ring is part of an edition of 23, and features a cast of the artist's left molar.

P-Orridge is best known for founding early industrial bands Throbbing Gristle and Psychic TV and his "Pandrogeny" project where he and his late wife, Lady Jaye Breyer P-Orridge, attempted to merge their identities through cosmetic surgery, hormone therapy and behavior modification. The artist also creates work heavily influenced by Dadaist collage, with examples in 30 Years of Being Cut Up, also part of the Herron artists' book collection.

Suprasensorial: Experiments in Light, Color was published in conjunction with the MOCA exhibition showcasing the work of Latin American Artists Carlos Cruz-Diez, Lucio Fontana, Julio Le Parc, Hélio Oiticica and Neville D’Almeida, and Jesús Rafael Soto. Like the exhibition, the catalog is participatory in nature and includes translucent red and green acetate sheets which are required to read the essays. Using the overlays, the book's text is revealed in Spanish or English.

Weekly Perusables: Super Hereos In Action

This isn't your average super hero book. Newport's heroes wear hand-knitted costumes reminiscent of what a grandmother might craft. This is part of the point as the forward explains, "Newport's costume's offer wry commentary on traditional notions of masculinity..."

This interesting library book was published in conjunction with Newport's show at Cranbook Art Museum in 2009, and includes plenty of images of his super knitting as well as essays in written and comic strip form.

Islamic Art, American & European Architecture, Work by Eugene James Martin

ARTstor Collection News!

David Wade has partnered with ARTstor to distribute approximately 1,500 images of Islamic art, now available in the Digital Library. These images illustrate patterns and designs found throughout the Islamic world, from the Middle East and Europe to Central and South Asia. They depict works Wade photographed during his travels, as well as drawings and diagrams produced for publication.

Photographer Dov Friedman is contributing approximately 1,500 images depicting architectural works in the United States and Europe to the ARTstor Digital Library. This collection will focus on historic architecture of New York City, as well as sites in Central and Eastern Europe.

ARTstor will be sharing 150 images of works by African American artist Eugene James Martin through a collaboration with Suzanne Fredericq, widow of the artist. The vibrant, abstract works to be represented in ARTstor will include paintings on canvas, mixed media collages, and pencil, pen, and ink drawings.

Mexican Retablos, Terra Foundation, Medieval Stained Glass

The latest ARTstor Collection News.

ARTstor, in collaboration with Douglas Massey, has recently added 170 images of Mexican retablos to the Digital Library. Retablos are small, colorful oil paintings made on tin and offered as votives of thanks for miracles granted and favors bestowed.

ARTstor has partnered with the to distribute approximately 700 images of American art in the Digital Library. The Terra Foundation collection of American art, which spans the colonial era through 1945, includes more than 700 works by such artists as George Bellows, Mary Cassatt, John Singleton Copley, Stuart Davis, Childe Hassam, Robert Henri, Maurice and Charles Prendergast, and James McNeill Whistler.

ARTstor is collaborating with Madeline Caviness, Mary Richardson Professor Emerita at Tufts University, to digitize approximately 1,400 images of medieval stained glass windows.

Announced yesterday: ARTstor is collaborating with the University of Minnesota Libraries to distribute approximately 5,750 images depicting posters and postcards from World Wars I and II.

The Herron Art Library subscribes to ARTstor: "a digital library of nearly one million images in the areas of art, architecture, the humanities, and social sciences with a set of tools to view, present, and manage images for research and pedagogical purposes."
